Brent Flinchbaugh

Born in Hanover, Pennsylvania, Brent began trumpet lessons as most students do in fourth grade. During high school, he studied with Dr. Elisa Koehler and subsequently with Dr. Langston Fitzgerald and Ed Hoffman as a student at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. After graduating from Peabody, Brent studied with David Bilger, principal trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra, at Temple University. While in Philadelphia, trumpet pedagogy and music education became an interest, and Brent suspended his graduate studies at Temple to return to Peabody for a Music Education Certification. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a Masters of Music degree from University of Maryland where his major teacher was Chris Gekker.
After earning this certification, Brent began teaching in Howard County, Maryland, where he is currently the Director of Bands at Clarksville Middle School. The program at Clarksville Middle School normally consists of 175 to 200 students in three full bands, as well as jazz band, brass quintet, woodwind quintet, saxophone quartet, percussion ensemble, among other chamber music groups. All bands earn superior ratings at festivals both in county and throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
Brent began substituting in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and New World Symphony while in undergrad at Peabody. He has worked with conductors Yuri Temirkanov, Robert Spano, Michael Tilson Thomas, Gunter Herbig, Marin Alsop and Gustav Meier to name a few, and has performed in premieres by John Corgliano, Nicholas Maw, Robert Gandolfi, Russell Nadel, among others. Performances have taken him around the world including performances in concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Jinji Lake Concert Hall (Suzhou, China) Heinz Hall, the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, and the New World Center.
Brent performs with the Lyric Brass Quintet and formerly with the Clipper City Brass at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Millennium Stage and with the Peabody Wind Ensemble. He can also be heard on Public Radio International’s “Sing in Exhalation: Carols from the Washington National Cathedral.”
In addition to frequent performances throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, Brent has a large and successful private trumpet studio consisting of some of the finest young players in Maryland who consistently earn first chair positions in All-State ensembles. He has taught students who are now or have been scholarship-winning trumpet performance majors at Northwestern University, Eastman School of Music, Peabody Conservatory, Shenandoah Conservatory, and University of Maryland.
Brent currently resides in Columbia, Maryland with his wife Shoshana. While not performing and teaching, he can often be found on local golf courses and bike trails. He is also a contributor to the International Trumpet Guild Journal and director and owner of Maryland Trumpet Institute.
